Our Legacy

Built on Experience. Driven by Compassion.

Strengthening Seniors. Supporting Families. Stabilizing Communities.

The story of Able Home Health Care began with a simple but powerful belief: seniors, individuals with disabilities, and families deserve compassionate support from people who understand their needs and care about their communities.

For more than 26 years, Able Home Health Care, LLC has served families throughout eastern North Carolina with compassion, integrity, reliability, and respect. Today, that commitment continues through Able Home Health Care Senior Services, Inc. (AHHCSS), a nonprofit organization created to address needs that often extend beyond traditional healthcare coverage.

A Legacy Rooted in Service

Able Home Health Care, LLC was founded in 1999 by Elmo B. Shearin and June H. Shearin, two eastern North Carolina natives with a shared commitment to serving seniors, individuals with disabilities, and families in their communities.

Before helping establish Able Home Health Care, June dedicated 27 years to Halifax County Social Services. Her experience gave her a deep understanding of the challenges facing vulnerable individuals and rural families, as well as the importance of dignity, dependable assistance, and access to trusted resources.

Together, Elmo and June transformed their compassion for others into an organization focused on providing quality in-home care to people who needed it most.

What began as a commitment to compassionate care grew into a trusted presence throughout Nash, Edgecombe, Halifax, Northampton, and Wilson counties.

More Than 26 Years of Trusted Care

Throughout its history, Able Home Health Care, LLC has worked alongside:

  • Seniors and adults with disabilities
  • Family and unpaid caregivers
  • Healthcare providers
  • Local agencies and service organizations
  • Community leaders
  • Rural families facing difficult circumstances

These relationships have provided a firsthand understanding of the everyday challenges that can affect a person’s ability to remain safely at home.

Transportation difficulties, food insecurity, caregiver stress, social isolation, limited resources, and unsafe living conditions may not always be addressed through Medicaid, Medicare, insurance, or traditional aging programs—but they can have a profound effect on a senior’s health, dignity, and independence.

Carrying the Legacy Forward

Able Home Health Care Senior Services, Inc. was established as a natural extension of this history of care.  While Able Home Health Care, LLC provides in-home care services, AHHCSS carries the organization’s broader spirit of service into a charitable and educational nonprofit mission.

Through practical assistance, caregiver education, advocacy, resource navigation, community partnerships, and developing initiatives, AHHCSS helps address needs that may fall outside traditional healthcare programs.

Our nonprofit does not replace the important work of existing providers and community organizations. Instead, we seek to complement those services, strengthen connections, and help seniors and families find the appropriate support.

HOPE, HELP & HOME

Our founders’ commitment to compassion and community lives on through HOPE, HELP & HOME: A Coordinated Senior & Family

Support Program.

  • HOPE — Helping seniors and families see a path forward.
  • HELP — Connecting people with practical services, trusted guidance, and compassionate support.
  • HOME — Promoting safety, dignity, and independence in the place seniors know best.

Through this program, our legacy continues across three connected service areas:

Senior & Family Stabilization

Helping older adults, adults with disabilities, and family caregivers access practical support, education, referrals, and coordinated resources.

Aging Safely at Home

Helping identify home-safety and accessibility concerns while developing responsible partnerships and resources that support safe, independent living.

Women Empowering Seniors

Equipping women to serve as caregivers, advocates, volunteers, mentors, entrepreneurs, and community leaders for seniors and families.

The Values That Guide Us

The values that shaped Able Home Health Care more than 26 years ago continue to guide our work today.

Compassion

We approach every senior and family with kindness, patience, and understanding.

Dignity

We honor each person’s worth, choices, experiences, and right to be treated with respect.

Integrity

We strive to act honestly, responsibly, and in the best interests of the people and communities we serve.

Accountability

We are committed to responsible stewardship, thoughtful program development, and measurable community impact.

Independence

We help older adults remain active participants in decisions affecting their lives, homes, and well-being.

Community

We believe lasting change is created when families, volunteers, organizations, and community leaders work together.

A Foundation for the Future

Our legacy is not measured only by the number of years we have served. It is reflected in the people whose lives have been touched along the way:

  • Seniors treated with dignity
  • Individuals supported in their own homes
  • Caregivers encouraged during difficult times
  • Families connected with trusted help
  • Community relationships built and strengthened
  • Lives improved through compassion and service

AHHCSS honors this history by growing carefully and responsibly. Programs and developing initiatives will be introduced in phases as funding, qualified partners, staffing, and organizational capacity become available.

This approach allows us to preserve the trust built over more than 26 years while developing sustainable services for future generations.

Honoring the Past. Serving Today. Building the Future.

The work begun by Elmo and June Shearin continues through every senior supported, every caregiver encouraged, every volunteer engaged, and every community partnership formed.

Their legacy reminds us that compassionate service can strengthen not only an individual, but an entire family and community.

As we move forward, our purpose remains clear:

Strengthening Seniors. Supporting Families. Stabilizing Communities.

Continue the Legacy With Us

We invite foundations, corporations, healthcare and behavioral-health providers, churches, civic organizations, local governments, educational institutions, skilled professionals, community leaders, donors, and volunteers to become part of our continuing story.

Together, we can help seniors remain:

Safe. Supported. Independent. At Home.
