A Legacy of Compassion, Service, and Community

Born and raised in eastern North Carolina, Elmo and June Shearin shared a deep love for the communities they called home and a lifelong commitment to helping others.

Before co-founding Able Home Health Care, LLC, June dedicated 27 years to Halifax County Social Services. Her work gave her a firsthand understanding of the challenges facing older adults, individuals with disabilities, vulnerable families, and rural communities.

In 1999, Elmo and June brought their experience, values, and compassion together to establish Able Home Health Care, LLC.

Their purpose was simple but meaningful: to provide compassionate and dependable in-home care that would help people remain safe, comfortable, and independent in their own homes.

For more than 26 years, Able Home Health Care, LLC has carried forward the values upon which it was founded:

• Treat every person with dignity and respect
• Serve families with compassion and understanding
• Provide dependable support during difficult times
• Protect independence whenever possible
• Remain accountable to the people and communities served

Elmo and June understood that providing quality care meant more than completing a list of services. It meant listening, building trust, recognizing each person’s dignity, and standing beside families when they needed support most.

Through decades of service, the Shearins saw that many challenges affecting seniors and caregivers extended beyond traditional in-home or medical care.

They encountered families facing:

• Transportation difficulties
• Food insecurity
• Caregiver stress and exhaustion
• Social isolation
• Limited access to trusted resources
• Home-safety and accessibility concerns
• Everyday needs not fully covered by traditional programs

They recognized that even a seemingly small unmet need could place a senior’s safety, stability, or independence at risk.  This understanding helped shape the vision for Able Home Health Care Senior Services, Inc. (AHHCSS)—a charitable and educational nonprofit created to extend the family’s legacy of service into new areas of community support.

The work of AHHCSS is grounded in a belief that reflects the values Elmo and June demonstrated throughout their lives:

Through education, advocacy, resource navigation, practical assistance, community partnerships, and developing initiatives, AHHCSS works to address needs that may fall outside the limits of Medicaid, Medicare, insurance, and other traditional programs.

Our nonprofit’s services are designed to complement—not duplicate—the important work of healthcare providers, aging programs, and community organizations.

The compassionate vision established by Elmo and June continues through HOPE, HELP & HOME: A Coordinated Senior & Family Support Program.

• HOPE — Helping seniors and families see a path forward.
• HELP — Connecting people with practical services, trusted guidance, and compassionate support.
• HOME — Promoting safety, dignity, and independence in the place seniors know best.

The program carries their legacy forward through three connected service areas:

Connecting older adults, adults with disabilities, and family caregivers with practical assistance, education, referrals, advocacy, and coordinated resources.

Helping older adults identify home-safety and accessibility concerns and, as resources become available, connecting them with education, trusted referrals, safety supplies, and qualified assistance.

Preparing women to serve as caregivers, advocates, volunteers, mentors, entrepreneurs, and community leaders for seniors and families.

The late Elmo B. Shearin’s spirit of service remains an important part of the organization’s foundation.  His compassion for others, belief in dependable service, and commitment to eastern North Carolina continue to inspire the work of Able Home Health Care and the developing mission of AHHCSS.

His legacy lives on through the people served, the families supported, and the community relationships built along the way.

June H. Shearin’s decades of work in social services and home care reflect a lifetime devoted to helping people maintain dignity, stability, and hope.

Her experience and compassion continue to shape the values of AHHCSS and its commitment to understanding the real-life needs of seniors, caregivers, and rural families.

The organization’s continued growth represents not a departure from the Shearins’ original mission, but an expansion of it.

Elmo and June’s legacy is measured not simply in years, but in:

What began in 1999 as a commitment to quality in-home care has grown into a broader vision for senior well-being, family stability, safe homes, and stronger communities.

We are deeply grateful to every caregiver, employee, donor, volunteer, partner, and community member who has helped carry this legacy forward.
