Born and raised in eastern North Carolina, Elmo and June Shearin dedicated their lives to serving the communities they proudly called home.

When Able Home Health Care, LLC was founded in 1999, its mission was simple: to provide compassionate, reliable care that would allow seniors and vulnerable individuals to remain safe, comfortable, and independent in their own homes.

For more than 26 years, that mission has guided the organization’s commitment to serving seniors and families throughout eastern North Carolina with dignity, compassion, and integrity.

Throughout the years, Elmo and June walked alongside countless families during some of life’s most difficult moments. Through those experiences, they witnessed firsthand not only the medical challenges seniors face, but also the everyday struggles that too often go unseen — transportation barriers, food insecurity, caregiver exhaustion, housing instability, and isolation.

Time and again, they saw families doing everything they could while critical needs remained unmet.  Those experiences ultimately inspired the creation of Able Home Health Care Senior Services, Inc. (AHHCSS, Inc.).

This nonprofit was founded on a simple belief:

No senior should lose dignity, independence, or stability simply because essential support is out of reach.

Today, AHHCSS, Inc. continues the legacy Elmo and June began more than two decades ago by helping address the gaps that insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, and traditional aging programs often cannot cover.

Through donor support and community partnerships, AHHCSS, Inc. helps provide:

• Transportation assistance
• Nutrition and food support
• Caregiver education and respite
• Housing stability advocacy
• Companion and support services
• Other essential extended care resources

These services help prevent avoidable crises, reduce hospitalizations, support exhausted caregivers, and allow seniors to remain safely at home with dignity and independence.

AHHCSS, Inc. represents the continuation of a lifelong commitment to serving the communities of eastern North Carolina with compassion, accountability, and hope.

We are deeply grateful for every donor, partner, volunteer, caregiver, and community member who believes in this mission and helps carry that legacy forward.
